Singer/songwriter/musician Alex Dupree (100W alum 2018) returns to perform at the downtown Corsicana Opry on Friday, Sept. 27: doors open at 7 PM, show begins 8 PM, $15 cover.
In anticipation of the release of his new vinyl album You Winsome, You Lonesome, Austin-born and Austin-based Dupree is undertaking an extensive tour of Texas, playing more than 20 shows around the state. A “Texas Edition” of the vinyl was released on Sept. 6—exclusively via Bandcamp and in-person at shows—with a worldwide release set for Nov. 8.
“That’s bringing me to a lot of smaller communities, and there are just a lot more people living outside the major cities, doing cool things, [and] 100 West [is] very much included in that,” Dupree says.
“I played at the 10-year anniversary party,” he continues, “and that was my first time coming back after being a resident. Every time I go back I see it more and more embedded in the fabric of Corsicana. It’s awesome to see the caliber of work that’s going through there.”
The tour takes its name from the first single on You Winsome, You Lonesome: “Texas Doesn’t Care.” Dupree’s first album, “Thieves is a sprawling and narrative record; You Winsome, You Lonesome has some country flourishes in the song structures and kinds of storytelling,” he says. Of the single, Dupree says, “It's a song about coming home and the perverse comfort of knowing that, no matter what has happened, Texas will always welcome you back. Because Texas doesn’t care.”
Additionally, the album cover was designed by friend and fellow resident alum Bradley Kerl. Of his 100 West residency in 2018, Dupree says, “It’s so special to get that kind of time to focus and commit and give all your attention to your craft.”
Alex Dupree is a published poet and songwriter. He got his musical start in Austin, Texas before moving to California to study poetry at UC Irvine. During this time, songwriting was never far from his mind, and he continued to write and perform with multiple Los Angeles country bands. He has since returned to Texas, where he is again focused on his own music. Despite a deep love for country music, Dupree’s songs never quite settle into that category, absorbing additional influences from the likes of Laurie Anderson, Arthur Russell, Bjork, and John Cale. His 2022 album, Thieves, was produced by Michael Krassner (Califone, Simon Joyner, Boxhead Ensemble) and features Max Knouse, Aaron Stern, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples), Buck Meek (Big Thief), as well as longtime collaborators Aisha Burns and Matt Matherne.
