BOOK BITES

A unique way to ‘read’ a book this summer is to taste the topic, by having a powerful reader get you hooked with a chapter or two.  The chosen passages are like a first course, to spark conversation, opinions, observances, and hopefully, an appetite for more on the subject.

Sunday, June 23, Storefront Art and Bookstore will host Book Bites, with three local but worldly creatives who will dish up a topic for ten minutes, while the audiences enjoy complimentary drinks and nibbles.  The Storefront opens at 3:30, and the program runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Each reader will remark on the ideas or themes that moved them to take the book off of the shelf and share the work.

Artist Nancy Rebal, a painter, sculptor and more, will read Distrust That Particular Flavor, a collection of 26 non-fiction essays written over a 20-year period by
American author William Gibson, better known for his speculative and science fiction novels.

Writer Pam Grace has chosen to read from Texas: The Great Theft, by Carmen Boullos. The author is considered Mexico’s greatest female writer and her latest novel reviewed by the Dallas News, “is evidence that our ideas about postmodern cowpoke tales have been woefully premature.”

The final reading will be voiced by the author himself; David Searcy.  His earlier titles include Ordinary Horror and Last Things, and most recently, Shame and Wonder and The Tiny Bee That Hovers At the Center of the World.  He will choose one to share.

The event is free to the public, and space is limited.  RSVP to lou@corsicanaresidency.org
