SEAN DONOVAN

Brooklyn, New York

M 2 3 presents Praxis of Matter - an exhibition of new work by Sean Donovan, including work from residency in Corsicana, on view 13 January through 26 February 2023.

Sculptor Sean Donovan explores how political and ecological motivations shape our understanding of environmental crises. Through assembling and replicating discarded industrial architecture and human detritus, Sean creates playful installations that call attention to climate change. In Corsicana, he continues his series investigating the ecological impacts of toxic pipelines by creating sculptures made from toxic resin and fiberglass, materials utilized in the oil industry. m23.co/sean-donovan

DAVID THORPE

Berlin, Germany

Shifting to watercolors during the pandemic, David Thorpe renders fantastical botanical forms that gesture to the fragile ways life insists, struggles, suffers, and flourishes. These strange, sometimes-hopeful, sometimes-ominous works take as source inspiration “De Materia Medica,” a millennia-old manuscript on the medicinal uses of plants, yet bear contemporary titles that furtively suggest political implications. In the studio, David attends to preparatory drawings and sketches which experiment with scale ahead of returning to watercolors. He is also working on poetic texts to accompany the paintings. caseykaplangallery.com/artists/Thorpe
